This is an overview document which provides the reader with a high-level description of the Alcatel BSS. It should be read before reading, 'System Description' and the other related documentation. The document provides an introduction to GSM operation, GPRS, and describes the principle role/tasks of the Alcatel BSS (Base Station Subsystem). It also describes the network organization, functions, network management, and operations and maintenance aspects of the BSS.
